Introducing the Bauble Bird Collection at Grey Wren Studio

A new flock of small hand-sculpted birds, designed around colour, character, and a shared rounded form.

There is something especially appealing about familiar birds reduced to their simplest, softest shape — still recognisable, still full of character, but gathered into a quieter, more rounded form. That idea became the starting point for Bauble Birds, a new collection of small hand-sculpted wool birds at Grey Wren Studio.

Inspired by much-loved favourites and designed around a shared silhouette, the collection explores a simpler approach to bird sculpture while still holding onto the colour, markings, and personality that make each species distinct. The result is a cheerful flock of decorative keepsakes, each one needle felted by hand and shaped to sit somewhere between ornament and sculpture.

A new flock of small hand-sculpted birds

Bauble Birds are a playful branch of Grey Wren Studio’s bird sculptures. Rather than focusing on fine feather detail, they are built around a soft, rounded base shape that gives the collection its name and character. Each bird is small, tactile, and easy to display — lovely on a shelf, nestled into a seasonal arrangement, or gathered together as part of a small flock.

Although the form is simplified, the intention is still to capture the feel of each bird in a gentle and recognisable way. Colour placement, markings, proportion, and overall presence all play an important part in giving every piece its own identity.

A shared shape, with each piece brought to life through colour and character

One of the pleasures of working on a collection like this is seeing how much can be expressed within a single form. Every Bauble Bird begins from the same rounded starting point, but each species asks for its own treatment. Some rely on strong contrast, others on softness and warmth, and others on distinctive flashes of colour that immediately bring the bird to mind.

This gives the collection a pleasing sense of unity while still allowing each bird to stand on its own. Seen together, the flock feels cohesive. Seen individually, each piece keeps its own charm.

Why the Blue Tit became the starting point

The Blue Tit was the first bird developed for the Bauble Bird collection, and for good reason. Its clear sections of blue, yellow, green, and white made it an ideal species for testing how colour and markings would sit across the shared rounded form.

Because the collection depends so much on surface mapping rather than fine feather detail, the Blue Tit offered a strong visual guide from the start. It helped establish how the shape could stay consistent while the identity of the bird remained clear. In many ways, it helped shape the visual language of the whole flock.

The first flock of British favourites

The first Bauble Birds bring together six familiar British birds, chosen for their colour, character, and contrast as a collection: Blue TitRobinWrenBlackbirdGoldfinch, and Green Woodpecker.

Together, they create a balanced flock — bright, warm, dark, patterned, and quietly characterful in different ways. Some are immediately bold, while others have a more understated charm, but all sit comfortably within the same rounded sculptural world.

This first flock also feels very much at home within Grey Wren Studio: birds shaped by observation, simplified with care, and made to be enjoyed as decorative keepsakes for bird lovers and nature-inspired homes.

Explore the Bauble Birds collection

The Bauble Birds collection is now beginning to take shape, with the first flock available and more birds planned to follow over time. You can explore the collection page to see the first six birds together, or visit each individual bird to see its own colour and character more closely.

As the flock grows, the Journal will also become a place to share more of the thinking behind the work — from collection ideas and colour decisions to the small details that help each wool bird feel alive in its own way.
