Why the Blue Tit Was the First Bauble Bird

Jul 13, 2026 | Studio Journal

Every collection has to begin somewhere, and often that first piece sets the tone for everything that follows. For the Bauble Birds, the Blue Tit felt like the natural starting point — not just for its familiarity, but for the way its colours define the shape of the bird so clearly.

A natural choice to begin

The Blue Tit is one of those birds that feels instantly recognisable. Its combination of soft blue, yellow, and white creates clear sections across the body, making it ideal for exploring a simplified, rounded form.

When working with a more minimal structure, those natural colour divisions become even more important. They help guide the eye and define the bird’s character without relying on fine feather detail.

Establishing the visual language

As the first piece in the Bauble Bird collection, the Blue Tit helped establish the visual rules for everything that followed.

The proportions needed to feel balanced. The body had to remain soft and rounded, while still suggesting the posture of a real bird. Colour placement became the key way to capture identity, allowing each species to feel distinct within a shared shape.

Each section of colour is built up gradually, with small amounts of wool layered and refined to keep the form clean and controlled. The aim is not to replicate every feather, but to suggest the bird through its most recognisable features.

This approach allows the piece to remain simple, while still holding the essence of the species.

A starting point for the collection

Once the Blue Tit was complete, it became easier to see how other birds might translate into the same form. Some rely more on colour contrast, others on pattern or tone, but all follow the same underlying structure.

The first piece quietly sets the direction, and everything that follows builds from that foundation.

The Blue Tit remains at the heart of the collection — a small, familiar bird that helped shape the beginning of a new line of work.
